Unpredictable rainfall threatens the crops, incomes and futures of smallholder farmers in Kenya. Without financial protection, climate shocks can force families to sell assets, skip meals and fall into cycles of debt. Smallholder farmers also struggle to access credit for equipment that could make them more resilient to weather volatility. This initiative aims to reduce that vulnerability and enable farmers to invest in solar-powered irrigation systems that provide a reliable water source even when rainfall is unpredictable. The initiative links SunCulture’s Pay-As-You-Grow financing with parametric insurance for drought and excess rain. If satellite-based weather data shows that drought or excessive rainfall triggers have been reached, farmers receive rapid pay-outs through mobile money. Pay-outs are used to cover loans so farmers can continue using their equipment, with any additional going directly to the farmer giving them immediate support to manage climate shocks.
