Worsening droughts and erratic rainfall are putting the crops, incomes and futures of Kenya’s smallholder farmers at risk. With over 50 million families in Sub-Saharan Africa and an estimated 608 million smallholder farmers worldwide relying on rainfed crops, climate shocks are driving a cycle of poverty, forcing families to sell assets, skip meals, or pull children out of school. The hybrid insurance policy combines parametric and area yield indices to protect against drought, excess rain, pests, and diseases, while offering loan forgiveness, direct cash transfers, and in-kind support such as seeds. By raising the pay-out value to 165% of the average loan amount, this locally informed solution helps farmers recover quickly and build a future of resilience and hope amidst the growing climate crisis.
One Acre Fund works in nine countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, equipping millions of smallholder farmers with the supplies and training they need to thrive.
