In response to the UN Secretary-General’s call to action on extreme heat, this initiative supports women informal workers in Gujarat’s low-income urban communities, those most exposed yet least protected. As India’s temperatures rise year after year, these “invisible” workers face life-threatening conditions while also navigating systemic barriers to financial services. The initiative exemplifies Humanity Insured’s commitment to localisation; women members of local credit cooperatives, who contribute to their own insurance premiums, played a central role in designing and evaluating the solution. By making climate risk insurance both affordable and inclusive, this initiative is helping to build lasting financial and physical resilience for the women of Mahila Housing Trust, their families and their communities.
