Coastal communities in the Philippines are highly exposed to tropical cyclones that damage ecosystems and threaten the livelihoods of local fishers. Tropical cyclone insurance provides direct pay-outs within 10 days of a triggered event. The policy covers three sites, each with four trigger points based on wind speed recorded by the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre at set distances. Pay-outs are scaled to the severity of the event, from 25 percent to 100 percent of the coverage limit. Funds are distributed according to a pre-agreed plan, directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts and to support early warning systems and livelihood programmes. This initiative provides rapid compensation to restore marine ecosystems, support local businesses and foster long-term economic growth. Nearly half of those protected are women.
Blue Alliance works with governments to build and manage Marine Protected Areas that regenerate coral reefs and improve the lives of local communities.
